If you were a cyborg, how would you adorn your body? This seems like something Ray Bradbury would have covered, and I can imagine him describing jewelry with the fresh glow of hydrogen gas nebulas at the twist of a finger. Well, there is a ring with a soft red glow, and although Bradbury is not here, it is the stuff for books. The Cyborg Ring according to Hackaday, is a project by Zach Fredin that only uses electronic parts.
You won’t uncover any jewelry findings; Zach designed the perfect sandwich of components.
The precise measurements of each part make it possible to choose components that will perfectly span the gap between the two boards. In the background of the image you can see SMD resistors on their long ends — a technique he used to allow the LEDs themselves to span between one resistor on each of the two PDBs to complete the circuit.
The result is a ring that allows space and light to exchange like good architecture. I don’t know if everyone has Zach’s patience when it comes to soldering small components, but one thing that can help is the Stickvise. It was originally a project on Hackaday and Zach did indeed use one to keep things steady while balancing parts on the PCB. So, next time you have a tricky solder to tackle, just know there’s a smart way to handle it.
